Since debuting in 2019, it has been nothing short of a global anime phenomenon. Adapted from Koyoharu Gotouge's manga, the series gained an enormous fan following and commercial success. In 2020, its first feature film, Mugen Train, broke all prior records and earned more than $506 million during the pandemic. Now, after five years of waiting, the anime is back on the big screen with Infinity Castle, which is the first of a trilogy adapting the slow death of the manga's final arc. Fans once again poured into movie theaters, getting ready to witness the next chapter unfold in Tanjiro Kamado's story.

Directly picking up from the cliffhanger ending of the fourth season, Infinity Castle sees Tanjiro and the Hashira, the elite Demon Slayer Warriors, fallen in a trap by Muzan Kibutsuji, the immortal King of Demons. Plunged into the labyrinth that is the Infinity Castle, the heroes must fight waves of perilous demons while negotiating the agitatingly confusing and constantly shifting halls of the castle. Each Hashira is set to confront one of Muzan's powerful 'Upper Rank' lieutenants in an explosive final battle, leading to a desperate vie to end Muzan's existence.

The movie assumes that one is familiar with the series in asking for little or no exposition for the new viewer. While the hardcore fans would feel at home, the other casual viewers might not be able to place someone like Kagaya Ubuyashiki, the late head of the Demon Slayer Corps. Still, Infinity Castle does provide enough of a frame for its main story to stay gripping.

Much of the allure of Demon Slayer has rested on its animation. Led by director Haruo Sotozaki, Ufotable combines traditional 2D animation with 3D-rendered environments. This allowed breathtaking action sequences to be shot with dynamic camera moves and cinematic compositing. Utilizing an innovative style first experimented with on Fate/Zero and Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works, Ufotable now fully delivers in Infinity Castle.

The Infinity Castle itself is a sight to look at, with lamplit corridors and labyrinthine halls calling to mind the Mirror Dimension in Doctor Strange or the Tesseract in Interstellar. This surreal backdrop sets to full throttle the power and stakes of the battles, as each Hashira and demon lieutenant engage in a series of jaw-dropping fights.

The movie, in line with the series' themes of compassion and understanding, looks into the backstory of Muzan's lieutenants. These moments of weakness and tragedy provide a certain emotional heft to the gory and action-packed sequences, drawing attention to the humanity behind the monsters.

In summation, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle is a captivating, breathtaking anime film that blends heart-thumping action with stinging storylines. With its splendid animation and exquisite direction, this movie establishes the benchmark for the other films in the series. It's an unforgettable cinematic experience for both longtime fans and those new to the series.
